I Am Grateful For John MacArthur

In my early to mid 20’s, there was a time when my desire to understand God’s Word exploded. At the time I was not around solid biblical preaching. But I found John MacArthur.

I consumed his works like a fat kid at a Golden Corral. And I can say that on good authority because I have been a fat kid in a buffet. Just ask my parents.

I read him, and still read on occasion, so much that my John MacArthur shelf is the biggest one in my office. I read his books, listened to his sermons, and watched his interviews.

I would sit down at my desktop computer, choose a sermon series, and burn them to cds. Then I would listen to them on my way to seminary. I was taking classes at an extension center 3 hours away, so I would get a few sermons in on the drive. And I often used the MacArthur Study Bible to better understand a text. I also remember hosting a few book discussions over different works of his in our home.

John MacArthur impacted my life and faith in a massive way. When I heard very little from the Scriptures in church, John MacArthur preached the truth and it refreshed my soul.

The Most Important Thing I Learned from MacArthur

There is one thing he taught me that will forever be etched into my life. And it’s the supremacy of God’s Word, the truth, over all of life.

Because of him, so study more.

Because of him, I believe in then power of God’s Word.

And because of him, I believe that God the Holy Spirit works in the preaching of His Word.

In a lot of ways he influenced me from afar to stick close to God’s Word and not to stray from it.

He’s Gone Now

I am sad that he’s gone. It’s sad to think that he won’t be preaching at that pulpit again at Grace Community Church. But I am happy for him. He preached the truth of God’s Word until the end and the heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
