Education without morals is a Hellish nightmare that few can imagine. And that Hellish nightmare is what Judges usher in when they attempt to remove any reference to God and His ways from education. I am, of course, speaking again about a judge telling Conway Public Schools to remove the 10 Commandments from their classrooms.
In 1940’s Germany most references to Christianity were done away with in the education of the children. But Germany also did a rather insidious thing. They did coopt the parts of Christianity that they could to serve Hitler’s cause. Dissident Christian groups were silenced by the Nazi regime.
What we see today is something akin to that. There is a morality that built this Christian Country, see my previous post on this topic. Now, I’m not saying that this Judge Brooks is attempting to turn Conway, Arkansas into a Hitlerian city. But I am saying that this removal of all reference to Christianity from public education is very, very dangerous to our society.
Creating More Intelligent Monsters
Learning didn’t stop when Christian morality was removed from Public Education in Germany. Learning and education continued. And the results of such things were monstrous.
In 1919 Germany made Public education compulsory. It effectively made homeschooling illegal. And In 1938 Hitler strengthened the laws and added a lot of propaganda to the education. Christianity was removed and distorted in their public education, and it created a people with very few dissenting voices.
I know that many of the people running these experiments were not Hitler’s youth. But it took a whole lot of people to pull these things off. Soldiers and doctors with no moral code conducted experiments on live humans. They sought knowledge that would not have been tolerated in Germany during previous generations.
There were sterilization experiments at Auschwitz, Ravensbruck, performed by doctors. They used X-rays, chemicals, and surgeries to sterilize prisoners. Sometimes they injected caustic substances directly into reproductive organs or exposed these organs to direct radiation to cause severe pain, infections, and permanent damage.
Mengele did experiments on twins that were completely horrific. He had diseases injected into twins, blood transfusions between them, and did surgery, often killing them, to figure out what changes had occurred in them.
In Dachau they placed prisoners in low-pressure chambers to that would mimic high altitudes, up to 68,000 feet. This was to help understand what human bodies go through at that height for their Luftwaffe pilots. They underwent extreme pain, brain damage, suffocation and people stood outside of this chamber and observed the effects of oxygen deprivation.
Also in Dachau they wanted to study hypothermia to see the effects it would have on German soldiers in the cold. And they did the most horrific things you are probably imagining they did. Some victims were submerged in ice-cold water. Others were left in freezing conditions for hours. They tested rewarming methods that were often painful or lethal on them. A lot of these people died from shock, organ failure, or faced health-issues for the rest of their lives.
Some of the concentration camps did studies on infectious diseases. They gave these people typhus, malaria, and hepatitis deliberately to study how they would respond. Most of them died. They did come up with some treatments that ended up being ineffective.
The use of mustard gas and other chemicals were used on Holocaust victims to test how effective these weapons were. They were attempting to create chemical weapons for enemies and treatments for their own soldiers.
And the experiments that were the most nightmarish were those that involved bone, muscle, and nerve transplants. This took place at Ravensbrück and Auschwitz. Doctors wanted to study tissue regeneration to see if it could be used for the advancement of their soldiers. Bones, muscles, and nerves were transplanted between prisoners without anesthesia, which caused death and infection.
The German people did not become less intellectual or curious when the moral code was removed from society and public education. They just became cruel in their intelligence. They became hideous and intelligent monsters that performed tasks we could never dream of.
But there is an example from America that is somewhat similar, though smaller in scope.
An American Example
This same sort of example can be used in the context of our own country. And it involves a rather horrific episode called “The Tuskegee Experiment”. In an era when Americans forgot that black people were also created in the image of God, our government injected many of them with syphilis to study them and see the effects. The 40-year study ended in 1972. 40 years…
Even here in America, when we forget the teaching of the Scriptures, we can quickly become monstrous in our activity. The teachings of Scripture were distorted to make people think that white people were superior to black people and, much like in Nazi Germany, the government felt free to dispose of them however they wished. It’s a monstrous evil accomplished only by tamping down and distorting moral truths.
Examples From Today
I recently read that almost 1/4 of Gen Z was wiped out by abortion. And it was done in the name of “Women’s Healthcare”, as if murdering a child could ever be called healthcare. And I wrote about that here. It is horrific. Our scientists are advocating for the mutilation of the genitalia of children as I write this. You watch the news. You see the degradation of society.
Our country advocates for the mutilation of children’s genitals if they think they feel like the opposite gender. Doctors inject children with drugs that will forever damage them and then cut parts off their bodies.
Why don’t we realize that this is due to the rejection of God by the society at large?
Why don’t we realize that Public education that does not instill morals will create intelligent wicked people and not the type of people that our society needs to have in it?
Men Without Chests
C.S. Lewis saw this trajectory long ago and wrote about it in his excellent book on education called “The Abolition of Man”. He argues that people can’t just be told to be virtuous because there is an “animal organism” to be conquered. And that can’t be done with logical arguments or sentimentalism. That must be done through training of the emotions to honor and love what should be honored and loved.
Lewis’s critique is on any type of education system that believes they can remove the moral code from education. Education is not just about filling the head with knowledge. It is also about filling the chest with the right sentiments. In fact he says this of students that are taught devoid of morals,
Their heads are no bigger than the ordinary; it is the atrophy of the chest beneath that makes them seem so.
And all the time-such is the tragi-comedy of our situation-we continue to clamour for those very qualities we are rendering impossible. You can hardly open a periodical without coming across the statement that what our civilization needs is more ‘drive’, or dynamism, or self-sacrifice, or ‘creativity’. In a sort of ghastly simplicity we remove the organ and demand the function. We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honour and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful.”
C.S. Lewis, “The Abolition of Man”, (New York: Touchstone, 1996), pp. 36–37.
Do we not see these very things in our day? Do we not see that we have not taught virtue to our children and so they are not virtuous?
Do we not see that we have rejected God and His ways, that we have spat upon His morals and found the result of that?
Do we not see that the removal of America’s former moral standard has resulted in a population that that has rejected God’s moral standard? Do we not see that see that this has put us in the same sort of desperate situation that Lewis talked about long ago?
Concluding Thought
I do not believe that hanging the Ten Commandments will solve all our problems? I would say that it is a start.
The only real remedy to our malady is for a mass revival that sees a good portion of the population baptized and living for Jesus. But that does not mean that we just throw our hands up in the air and act like there is no hope.
This is a Christian country after all. We have a moral code. And we should expect the citizenry to know it and our country to be formed by it.
We should expect any Public education in a Christian land to reflect Christian morality and so form the sentiments of our young people.
And while we do that, we work and pray for revival in our land.
