I have been voting for around 20 years, and during that time there has been one issue that has been the make or break issue for me. This issue informs who I will vote for. And that has been abortion. I am deeply Pro-Life, so the person that holds that same belief in the sanctity of human life has received my vote.
And for that time period there has been one political party that I could count on to be Pro-Life. That party is the Republican Party.
There were 1,037,190 abortions performed last year. That is the first full year after Roe v. Wade was overturned. If you are Pro-Life it must still be a priority.
And here is why I am saying this right now.
Donald Trump did great things for the Pro-Life cause in his first term as president. I am very thankful for that and applaud him for it. I cannot deny this. Truly, he did more for the Pro-Life cause than any president in my lifetime. But the Pro-Life fight is not over.
The Abortion Battle Has Changed, It’s Not Over
At just the moment when the abortion fight has changed locations, the GOP wants to leave the fight and receive my support. I don’t think so. Two things are still in play, a national abortion ban and the abortion pill.
People desiring to be Donald Trump’s running mate are going on national television claiming that the GOP has done what they needed to do in overturning Roe v. Wade. Now that abortion access is decided at the state level, they claim victory. It’s as if that doesn’t have to be their concern anymore.
But the platform for the Republican party has not been simply overturning Roe v. Wade. It’s been a national abortion ban. You can’t move the goalpost and then claim the battle is over. Here is the text from the 2024 GOP Platform as it currently stands.
Republicans Will Protect and Defend a Vote of the People, from within the States, on the Issue of Life We proudly stand for families and Life. We believe that the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States guarantees that no person can be denied Life or Liberty without Due Process, and that the States are, therefore, free to pass Laws protecting those Rights. After 51 years, because of us, that power has been given to the States and to a vote of the People. We will oppose Late Term Abortion, while supporting mothers and policies that advance Prenatal Care, access to Birth Control, and IVF (fertility treatments).
Because abortion is the taking of a human life, we have understood that it is necessary to eliminate it. It is an evil on an unimaginable scale. According to the Guttmacher Institute there were a lot of abortions last year, the first full year since Roe v. Wade was overturned.
Data for 2023, the first full year after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, show that an estimated total of 1,037,190 clinician-provided abortions took place in US states without a total ban.
That does not look like a battle that is over. That is over 1 million children murdered, most of which were out of pure convenience. Does that look like a battle that is over?
And there is also the abortion pill.
The abortion pill is really a combination of two pills: Mifepristone and Misoprostol. Here is an explanation of it from Planned Parenthood’s website.
RU-486 is the former name of mifepristone — one of the medications that you take to have a medication abortion. RU-486 is now called “the abortion pill” or “Mifeprex” (the brand name for mifepristone).
RU-486 was developed in the 1980s. It’s been safely used in Europe since 1987, and in the US since 2000.
RU-486 blocks a hormone that your body needs to continue a pregnancy. It works best when you use it with another medication called misoprostol, which causes bleeding to empty your uterus.
The RU-486 abortion pill is a safe and effective way to end an early pregnancy.
And, the GOP thinks they can get the evangelical vote without doing things evangelicals want.
I don’t think it will work that way. And I know it won’t for me.
How Will I Vote?
I will still vote as Pro-Life as I can. But the choices are not as clear cut as they were just a few year’s ago. It simply means that my allegiance to the Republican Party will not be as strong as it was in day’s gone by. It’s still better than the Democrat position, which seems bloodthirsty with regard to abortion.
But to be perfectly honest, if a more Pro-Life option were to reveal itself, I would jump on board quickly. There were 1,037,190 abortions performed last year. The first full year after Roe v. Wade was overturned. The abortion fight is not over.
It must still be a priority.
I am hoping that the backlash from the decision causes some changes to be made before the convention next week. But if not, I will be looking for people that want to save the lives of babies to vote for.
