There really is one thing that, for me, trumps all other current issues out there today. It is the one single issue that will move me to vote for people I don’t agree with on most issues. That issue for me is abortion.
I believe something very simple. I believe something that is considered backward by much of our country’s population. I believe that Dr. Seuss was right when he said, “A person’s a person no matter how small.” in the book Horton Hears A Who.
Mixed Emotions
I have what I would consider to be mixed emotions about this. I was alive during the Bill Clinton presidency when our country was wealthy. We were booming in the 90’s. I was also fed up during George W. Bush’s era with the incredible speed with which that wealth went away. And, if you think I am talking about big figures that don’t matter to the average American then you are wrong. Unemployment and other personal figures were also down during the Clinton presidency.
Honestly, once elected, I had hoped that President Obama would have been able to do much the same. To his credit, in some ways he has. In some ways he has been successful economically. Yet, it is nothing in comparison to what President Clinton had done. And, to be fair about this, we will not really know the impact of President Obama’s time in office until he has been out for a few years.
What is true, however, is that the Republican candidates have not been nearly as good with our country’s finances as the Democratic candidates…and this makes me sad. Because, I am a one issue voter.
I do not like the way that the Republican party oftentimes degrades the poor. They don’t seem to talk about the impoverished as if they are even people. Yes, there are people who take advantage of government programs like WIC, Food Stamps, Unemployment, and Disability. That is not going to be denied by me. But, at the same time it has been a tremendous help to many Americans who truly did need it. (I have written more about this here.)
Yet again, I find myself saddened a bit. And the reason is that I am a one issue voter. I really do find myself in a situation where I have a lot of disagreement with the candidates that I will vote for. It is for one reason only.
Where The Rubber Meets The Road
Life is the crux of the issue for me. This nation was founded on the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. Life is very important in this assertion.
Furthermore, I am a Christian who believes God’s Word when it says that all people are created with a dignity that no other creature contains. God has endowed all people with the privilege of being image bearers. And since I do take the statement “a person’s a person no matter how small” to be true, then abortion is snuffing out the life of a child, taking away his right to life, and destroying one of God’s image bearers.
Here is the rub. Even without Scripture we have a good amount of agreement about life beginning at conception. Doctors have been saying that life starts at conception for years. Here is a little reading for you to do on this topic.

If, as I think good thinking and science agree on, life begins at conception. Then the statement, “a person’s a person no matter how small”.
The Horror In The Numbers
There have been over 53 million abortions since Roe v. Wade. If “a person’s a person no matter how small”, then there has been over 53 million “legal” murders committed since 1973. This number is staggering. Gun violence gets a lot of coverage in our country, but this dwarfs gun violence.
There are many more children slaughtered in the name of “reproductive rights” than there are with gun violence. If you have a problem with my use of the word “slaughtered”, then read this description of how a living person is treated from a pro abortion website. No person should be treated this way.
This is why I am so pro-life that it trumps everything else. There is a massive slaughtering of children going on in America. To make matters worse, children should be safest in their mother’s womb. Yet, this is where they are violently assaulted at an incredibly alarming rate. Whether it’s being cut to pieces and vacuumed out of the womb, salt poisoned so that there skin melts off and they die of salt poisoning, or any other method of abortion. I will vote against it. And, I believe that you should too. Over 53 million children deserved better. I don’t want 53 million more to be slaughtered.
“A person’s a person no matter how small.”
